Toepfer v. reynolds

Case Name:

Toepfer v. Reynolds

Case Status: Settled

Court: U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas

Clinic Involvement: Counsel

About the Case:

Nikolus Toepfer sought to practice his Muslim faith while incarcerated in Arkansas. He asked his jailers to accommodate his Ramadan fast, allow him to abstain from eating pork, and provide him with a Qur’an and prayer rug, but they denied all his requests. Mr. Toepfer brought suit, and the District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas appointed him counsel.

After Meeting with Mr. Toepfer in prison, clinic students collaborated with co-counsel to draft an amended complaint asserting claims under the First Amendment, the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, and the laws of the state of Arkansas. Using interrogatories and document requests, students obtained evidence corroborating Mr. Toepfer’s claims and negotiated a successful settlement on his behalf.
